Where to Eat in Abilene, Texas — A Local's Restaurant Guide
Where to Eat in Abilene, Texas — A Local's Restaurant Guide
One of the first questions new Abilene residents ask us is: where should we eat?
And we love answering it because the Abilene food scene is genuinely better than most people expect!
Yes, we have the national chains. But what makes Abilene special is the collection of locally owned restaurants that have been feeding this community for years — and the exciting new spots that keep opening as the city grows. Here's your essential guide.
Texas BBQ
No introduction to Abilene dining is complete without BBQ, and Abilene takes it seriously!
Jay's BBQ Shack
A beloved local institution with covered outdoor seating and a fun, lively atmosphere. They were featured in the Texas Monthly Top 50 Barbecue Joints! They have great brisket, house-made sausages (try the New Mexico Christmas!), and the mac and cheese is anything but ordinary! It's got green chiles that make it worth ordering on its own. Be prepared to wait in line for a while to get some, though!
The Shed Market
Another adored local spot with roots here in the Big Country. Their brisket is great, but they are known for their pork ribs! They don’t slack on the sides either! Their jalapeño cream corn is out of this world, and their potato salad is a fan favorite!
Steakhouses & Fine Dining
Perini Ranch Steakhouse
This deserves a special mention even though it's technically located in Buffalo Gap, just a short drive from Abilene. This is a James Beard Award-winning steakhouse that has earned national recognition! It's a true West Texas landmark and worth the drive for a special occasion. Their Dusted Shrimp and mesquite-grilled steaks are legendary, but my favorite is their burger!
The Beehive Restaurant
One of Abilene's most celebrated dining destinations, offering a more upscale spot with Old West character, aged Angus beef, and generous portions. Texas Monthly and Southern Living have both taken notice. The filet is exceptional!
Joe Allen’s
Another Abilene staple! Known for mesquite-fired steaks and a classic Texas atmosphere. Their lunch specials are a great value, and dinner is a reliable choice for a great night out.
Copper Creek Restaurant
With excellent steaks and a polished atmosphere Copper Creek works well for date nights, business dinners, and lunches!
Cork and Pig Tavern
A great spot for a date night, or a nice dinner with friends! They have a seasonally rotating menu with classics like steak, pork chops, and short rib. But many rave about their pizzas and cocktails! They also have weekend brunch that you don't want to miss!
Breakfast & Brunch
The Flipping Egg
One of Abilene's go-to breakfast spots. The menu covers all the classics, and the atmosphere is welcoming and casual.
The Gap Cafe
Located in Buffalo Gap, it is a great stop for a weekend breakfast or lunch, with a charming atmosphere worth the short drive!
The Dixie Pig
An Abilene staple, serving classic diner breakfast and lunch favorites since the 1930s!
Tex-Mex & Mexican
Abilene has a strong Tex-Mex tradition and plenty of options to explore, so many that we could probably do an entire blog just on Tex-Mex!
Casa Herrera
A community favorite serving Abilene since the 70s! Many locals rave about their enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos!
Miguel's Mex Tex Cafe
A creative flair to classic Mexican dishes, and the patio is a popular spot on a pleasant evening. Don't expect traditional Tex-Mex at Miguel's! They are well known for their margaritas that use house-made triple sec, and their brisket tacos are a favorite of mine!
Blue Agave
A newer option in town, with a loyal local following. They offer Tex-Mex classics! Their chips and salsa are amazing! And I’ve heard great things about their tacos!
Pizza
Vagabond Pizza
Vagabond has developed a passionate local following and a reputation that reaches well beyond Abilene; some locals will tell you it's the best pizza in Texas. They also have a great selection of wine and craft beer. Try the Lucia, it has Calabrese salami and jalapeño jelly, and is an incredible bite!
Joe’s Pizza
So there are two Joe’s Pizzas in Abilene, and they’re not owned by the same people! They both offer classic pizzas, pasta, and sandwiches. It’s a hot local debate on which location is better, but if you’re looking for a classic slice, either one is a great option!
If you’re looking for a pizza buffet to take the kids to look for Gatti’s, Potter’s or Cici’s! All three have great pizza options and offer game areas for the kiddos to play!
International & Asian Cuisine
Abilene's dining scene is more diverse than newcomers expect.
Krua Thai Restaurant
A local favorite for traditional Thai. The pad thai and panang curry are standouts. Seating is extremely limited, though, so you probably will need to order takeout!
Sup Noodle Bar
Offers freshly made noodles, sushi, and Chinese options and is a local favorite.
Hashi
Brings Japanese fusion to Abilene with a fast-casual hibachi option.
Phoenix Pho
Serving up Vietnamese classics like Pho, Bahn mi, and boba teas, Phoenix Pho has been a local favorite since they opened in Allen Ridge in 2020!
Coffee Shops
Abilene has a growing coffee culture. Several locally owned cafés have set up in historic buildings downtown or scattered around the city! You are never far from a locally owned coffee shop! Check out our Coffee Shops Guide blog!
Front Porch Coffee Co. & Bakery
Front Porch lives up to its name! it feels like coming home. This downtown favorite roasts its coffee in-house and bakes its pastries and breads from scratch daily, which means the moment you walk in the door, you're greeted by one of the most welcoming combinations of aromas in all of Abilene. Try their campfire latte; it’s like drinking a fresh oatmeal cookie!
Monks Coffee Shop
Monks is a downtown Abilene institution! Housed in a space with exposed brick walls and an eclectic, artsy atmosphere, Monks has been keeping Abilene caffeinated and creatively inspired for years.
Mezamiz Coffee House
Mezamiz is hard to categorize in the best possible way! By day, it's a full-service cafe with coffee, soups, sandwiches, bakery items, and excellent Wi-Fi that draws students, remote workers, and business meetings in equal measure. By evening, it transforms into a venue for open mic nights, live music, art events, and a happy hour that includes wine and beer. If you're new to Abilene and looking for a place that has it all, Mezamiz is a strong contender!
A Note on the Food Scene
Abilene's restaurant scene is growing fast — new spots are opening regularly as the city expands. The best way to stay current is to follow local accounts on social media!
And when in doubt, ask a local. Abilenians are happy to share their favorites.
