Museums

Frontier Texas!

Step back into the frontier at this 360-degree immersive history museum, which covers life in 19th-century West Texas and earns rave reviews from locals and visitors alike.

The Grace Museum

Located in the beautifully restored historic Hotel Grace downtown, it covers both art and local history across multiple galleries. Rotating exhibitions keep it fresh year-round.

The 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum

A must for military history enthusiasts and a meaningful stop as you learn about the 12th Armored Division, a World War 2 unit based out of Camp Barkley here in Abilene. This collection is comprised of 12th Armored Division archives, memorabilia, and oral histories, along with selected equipment and materials loaned or donated by others.

The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature

A world-class children's art museum in the heart of the Storybook Capital of America. The NCCIL offers a wide range of exhibits and events for the whole family! Downtown Abilene is also home tolife-sized statues of characters from classic children's literature, making it a wonderful walking experience for families.

Dyess AFB Memorial Museum and Linear Air Park

Located at Dyess AFB. The museum features many exciting artifacts regarding the life of Lt. Col. Dyess and the history of Dyess Air Force Base and Abilene Army Airfield. The Air Park has over 30 US Air Force and Army Air Corps historic aircraft on static display along a linear path that will take you through bombers, aerial refuelers, cargo planes, trainers, fighters, and more! 

Tours are conducted Tuesday through Friday by appointment. Call ahead to book a tour at the museum office 325-696-2099


Outdoor Recreation

Lake Fort Phantom Hill 

Just north of the city, Fort Phantom offers boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and one of the best sunset views in West Texas. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.

Kirby Lake

Another popular local spot for fishing and outdoor relaxation. There is a park, hiking trails, and places to ride your bikes!

Grover Nelson Park

Offers walking trails, disc golf, and fishing, making it a great option for a morning walk or an afternoon adventure.

The Abilene Zoo 

Consistently ranked among the top zoos in Texas for its size. With over 250 species, a giraffe feeding experience, and events, it's a genuine family destination and a favorite for newcomers to the city. They are also in the process of expanding the zoo, planning to double it's current size!


Live Music & Entertainment

Live music is woven into the fabric of Abilene life.

Potosi Live is one of the region's top music venues, regularly hosting national and regional acts.

The Taylor County Expo Center and Abilene Auditorium handle larger touring events and concerts.

Downtown Abilene's nightlife scene has grown considerably in recent years.

KAO in the Soda District and Peacock Patio on Hickory Street are two of the more popular evening destinations. The Ice House at LSDG hosts regular live music.

Monthly ArtWalk

On the second Thursday of each month, downtown Abilene's art museums, galleries, and shops open their doors for the ArtWalk. It’s a family-friendly evening of art, live music, and community. It's free to attend and a wonderful way to get to know the city and meet your neighbors.
