What Is Rainy Creek?
Rainy Creek is a 35-acre mixed-use retail and entertainment development located on the northeast side of Abilene, adjacent to Abilene Christian University along I-20 and East Ambler Avenue. The development is the result of a partnership between the City of Abilene, Taylor County, and the Development Corporation of Abilene — a collaboration that reflects the city's commitment to managed, strategic growth.
The project is being developed by Wallace Ventures. The vision is a modern retail and entertainment destination that complements the Abilene community while supporting long-term regional growth.
The Anchor: Bass Pro Shops Outpost
The headline name at Rainy Creek is Bass Pro Shops.
A 72,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outpost is confirmed as the primary anchor of the Rainy Creek development, with a projected opening in early 2027. This will be the 19th Bass Pro Shops location in Texas and represents a major milestone for Abilene retail.
Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris captured the spirit of the announcement: "We're honored to serve sportsmen and women of West Texas with another convenient location. It's inspiring to know we'll be outfitting families throughout the region with everything they need for fishing at Lake Fort Phantom, kayaking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors."
The Abilene store is described as "a tribute to the great sporting heritage of the region and a celebration of everything Texas" — consistent with the immersive, destination-style experience Bass Pro Shops is known for throughout North America.
The Abilene location is expected to employ more than 115 staff members — a meaningful economic contribution to the local workforce.
What Else Is Coming?
The Rainy Creek development will feature six restaurants ranging from 5,500 to 6,700 square feet, more retail stores in addition to Bass Pro Shops, and a large gym. As of this post, Bass Pro Shops is the only tenant officially named. Additional business announcements are expected as the project progresses toward its 2027 opening.
