Every Place to Go Swimming in Abilene, TX — Public Pools, Memberships & Free Options

If you've spent even one summer in Abilene, Texas, you already know — it gets hot. Like, 100 degrees in May hot! And when the Texas heat kicks in, finding a good place to cool off becomes a top priority for newcomers and lifelong locals alike.

Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly public pool, a private membership with amenities, or a completely free option for the whole family, Abilene has more swimming options than most people realize. Here's a complete rundown of every place you can go swimming in Abilene, TX.

Public Pools in Abilene, TX

Public pools are open to anyone — no membership required. You pay per visit and enjoy the day.

Adventure Cove Water Park

Adventure Cove is the go-to public swimming destination in Abilene and a genuine summertime staple for local families. Operated by the City of Abilene and located off Barrow and South 7th Street, it's a great water park experience at a very affordable price.

What's there:

  • Water slides
  • A dedicated kids' area with shallow water — perfect for toddlers and young children
  • A lazy river
  • Food and drinks available for purchase on-site

What to know before you go:

  • Outside drinks are not permitted inside the park
  • Admission is $10 and under, depending on your age and height
  • Children 2 and under get in free
  • Season passes are available for families who plan to visit regularly — definitely worth it if you'll be going more than a few times

Adventure Cove is a great value and a genuinely fun day out. If you haven't been, put it on your summer list.

Abilene State Park Pool — Buffalo Gap

The Abilene State Park in nearby Buffalo Gap is home to a historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)-era pool originally built in the 1930s — a beloved community landmark that has served generations of Abilene residents. Unfortunately, as of this writing, the pool remains closed until further notice.

According to a May 2026 press release from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the pool has been undergoing extensive renovations since 2022. Structural repairs to the pool, pump room, and children's pool have been completed, and the current phase involves repairing and replacing pump equipment and filtration systems. When the full renovation is complete, nearly all of the pool's equipment will have been replaced. A significant undertaking for a facility that hadn't been fully updated in over 40 years.

TPWD has acknowledged the community's frustration with the extended closure and has expressed a commitment to reopening the pool as soon as possible. For the most current updates on the reopening timeline, follow Abilene State Park's social media pages. The park itself remains open and offers a range of other activities, including hiking, biking, birding, and geocaching, while the pool work continues.

Private Membership Pools in Abilene, TX

Private membership pools typically require an annual or seasonal membership fee. In exchange, you get access to well-maintained facilities, a more controlled environment, and additional amenities depending on the location.

Abilene Swim Club & Wylie Swim Club

Abilene has two dedicated swim clubs — the Abilene Swim Club and the Wylie Swim Club — located on opposite sides of town, making one or the other conveniently accessible depending on where you live.

Both clubs offer family memberships for the summer season. Pricing can vary year to year, but family memberships at the Wylie Swim Club have historically run around $500 for the season — a solid value for a family that plans to swim regularly all summer long.

We recommend calling each club directly to ask about current membership pricing, availability, and any early-season specials they may be offering.

The YMCA

The Abilene YMCA offers one of the most versatile membership options in the city — and one of the only indoor pool options available year-round.

What your YMCA membership includes:

  • Access to an indoor swimming pool — swim in the summer heat or the winter cold, it doesn't matter
  • Workout equipment and fitness facilities
  • A wide range of programs and activities for all ages

Family memberships at the YMCA run approximately $900 per year, though pricing and available promotions change regularly. Visit the YMCA's website for current rates and membership specials. If you're looking for a membership that goes beyond swimming and gives your family access to a full fitness facility, the YMCA is an excellent option.

Abilene Country Club

The Abilene Country Club offers an outdoor pool and an indoor pool as part of its membership amenities. They have membership tiers that offer access to the club's different amenities at their two locations.

Membership options include:

  • A more affordable membership tier focused on pool access and dining
  • Full memberships that add golf course access for those who want it

The Country Club is a great option for families who want the added benefits of its dining, social, and sports amenities. Contact the Abilene Country Club directly for current membership pricing and availability.

Free Swimming Options in Abilene, TX

Not every cooling-off option requires a ticket or a membership. Abilene has a couple of great free choices worth knowing about.

Splash Pads

Abilene has several free splash pads scattered across the city — a fantastic option for families with young children who just want to play in the water without the cost or logistics of a full pool visit. Splash pad season typically runs from April through October, and all locations are open seven days a week from dawn to dusk.

Current locations include Nelson Splash at Grover Nelson Park, Redbud Splash at Redbud Park, Valentine Splash at Coach James Valentine Park, and additional pads at Scarborough, Stevenson, and Sears parks. Note that individual locations can close temporarily for maintenance, so it's worth checking the City of Abilene's social media pages before heading out.

We put together both a dedicated video and a full blog post covering every splash pad location in Abilene — check those out for addresses, photos, and everything you need to know:

Lake Fort Phantom Hill

Lake Fort Phantom Hill, located just north of Abilene, offers a free beach-style swimming area that's a wonderful option for a full family day out.

What's available at the lake:

  • A beach area for swimming
  • A playground for kids
  • Restroom facilities
  • Plenty of open space to set up a picnic

Pack a cooler, grab a blanket, and make a day of it! All at no cost beyond whatever you bring with you. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors without the heat becoming unbearable.

Other Options Worth Considering

If none of the above quite fits your situation, there are a couple of other paths worth exploring:

Community pools in HOA neighborhoods: Some residential neighborhoods in Abilene include community pools as part of their homeowners' association amenities. If having pool access is a priority for your family, it's worth factoring HOA communities into your home search. Keep in mind that HOA fees cover the cost of maintaining these shared amenities.

Your own backyard pool: For those who want pool access on their own schedule with no membership fees or admission costs, installing a backyard pool is always an option. It's a larger upfront investment, but for families who swim frequently, it can pay off in convenience and enjoyment over time.
