Fun Places & Things to Do with Kids in Abilene, Texas

One of the best-kept secrets about Abilene, Texas, is how much there is to do with kids. New residents from larger cities often arrive expecting to make do with less — and are genuinely surprised by the variety, quality, and affordability of family activities here. From world-class animal encounters and immersive history museums to water parks, indoor play centers, and wide-open parks, Abilene punches well above its weight for family fun.

Whether you've just moved to the Big Country or you're a longtime resident looking for something new, here's your complete guide to the best family activities in Abilene.

🦒 Abilene Zoo

📍 2070 Zoo Lane, Abilene | abilenezoo.org

The Abilene Zoo is the crown jewel of family activities in the Big Country and one of the most consistently praised attractions in all of West Texas. With over 250 species from around the world, beautifully landscaped grounds, and a setting adjacent to Nelson Lake, it's the kind of place families return to again and again throughout the year. They are also currently in a major expansion project to double the size of the zoo!

Don't miss:

  • Giraffe feeding — one of the most popular and memorable experiences at the zoo. Kids (and adults) hand-feed giraffes up close in a way that's genuinely thrilling
  • Safari Express Train — a classic zoo train ride through the grounds that young children absolutely love
  • Swan paddle boats on Nelson Lake — a peaceful and fun way to extend your visit
  • Interactive exhibits — the zoo offers learning experiences alongside the animal encounters throughout the grounds

📌 Tip: Go early on weekdays during summer to beat the heat and the crowds. The zoo is most enjoyable in the morning hours.

🎢 Adventure Cove Water Park

📍 South 7th Street & Barrow, Abilene | abilenetx.gov

When the West Texas summer heat arrives — and it arrives fast — Adventure Cove is where Abilene families go to cool off. This locally loved water park is a full day of fun at a very family-friendly price point.

What's there:

  • Water slides for older kids
  • A dedicated kids' area with shallow water — perfect for toddlers and young children
  • A lazy river for the whole family
  • Food and drinks available on site

Admission: $10 and under, depending on age and height. Children 2 and under are free. Season passes are available and well worth it for families who plan to visit more than a couple of times.

📌 Outside drinks are not permitted inside the park, but the on-site food and drink options are solid.

🤠 Frontier Texas!

📍 625 N. 1st Street, Downtown Abilene | frontiertexas.com

Frontier Texas! is one of those rare attractions that earns its exclamation point. This immersive western heritage center uses state-of-the-art technology — 360-degree multimedia, holographic spirit guides, and life-sized dioramas to bring the story of 19th-century West Texas to life. It's genuinely unlike anything else in the region and consistently earns rave reviews from families visiting for the first time.

Kids who might be skeptical of a "history museum" are quickly drawn in by the immersive format, as the holographic presentations are interactive and engaging in ways traditional museum exhibits simply aren't. Adults often find it just as compelling.

Saturday Shootouts: In spring, Frontier Texas! hosts outdoor living-history performances based on the real 1884 Pine Street shootout! This is a family-friendly, dramatic experience that's completely unique to Abilene. Check their website for seasonal scheduling.

📌 Staff at Frontier Texas! are consistently praised for being friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Don't rush, you’ll want to plan at least 2 hours.

📖 Abilene Public Library at Heritage Square  ⭐ NEW in 2026

📍 Main Branch: 1699 S. 1st Street, Abilene Heritage Square | abilenetx.gov/library

The Abilene Public Library moved into a stunning new 65,000-square-foot home at Abilene Heritage Square in May 2026 — and it's a genuine upgrade for the whole community. The new facility is designed as a modern gathering place for learning, creativity, and connection, with expanded collections, study rooms, makerspaces, podcast studios, and family learning areas. A breathtaking three-story blown-glass sculpture greets visitors at the entrance, created in part by Abilene community members in a workshop at The Grace Museum.

Beyond the beautiful new space, the library hosts free programming for children of all ages throughout the year — and in summer the schedule expands significantly.

Summer 2026 highlights:

  • Regular storytime sessions Monday through Thursday, plus weekend options
  • Live performances hosted by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council in the library auditorium — interactive productions designed for kids
  • Animal visits in partnership with the Abilene Zoo
  • Makerspace classes introducing kids to 3D printing and Cricut technology
  • Special programming at branch libraries, including Sears Park outdoor events

All of this is free to Abilene Residents. And with the Spark Science Center located right on the same Heritage Square campus, a library visit and a science museum visit make for a perfect combined family outing in one location.

📌 The new Heritage Square campus also includes restored historic spaces — Owen Hall auditorium and the Heritage Event Center gymnasium that are available for rentals!

🌊 Lake Fort Phantom Hill

📍 North of Abilene

For a free outdoor family day, Lake Fort Phantom Hill is hard to beat. The reservoir just north of Abilene offers a small beach swimming area, a playground, restroom facilities, and plenty of picnic space — all at no cost beyond what you bring with you.

It's a wonderful place for a Saturday morning, a sunset picnic, or a lazy afternoon with the kids. Fishing, kayaking, and simply watching the West Texas light change over the water are all part of what makes this place a local favorite.

🎭 Monthly ArtWalk

📍 Downtown Abilene — 2nd Thursday of every month | www.artwalkabi.com

Every second Thursday of the month, downtown Abilene's galleries, museums, and shops open their doors for ArtWalk, and it's one of the most family-friendly evenings the city offers. Live music, art, interactive activities, and the simple pleasure of walking a vibrant downtown street make it a wonderful regular outing for families who want to get out and experience their city.

It's free, it's accessible, and it's a great way to meet your community, especially if you're new to Abilene.

A Note on Abilene for Families

One of the things that makes Abilene genuinely special for families is its scale. In a larger city, a day out with the kids involves traffic, parking stress, crowds, and expense. In Abilene, you can get from your front door to the zoo, the splash pad, a great lunch, and back home again in the same time it takes to park at a major metro attraction.

That quality of life — affordable, accessible, community-oriented — is one of the biggest reasons families who come to Abilene for a job or a military assignment often choose to stay.

If you're thinking about making Abilene home for your family, we'd love to help you find the right neighborhood and the right home to go with it.
