Best Parks in Abilene, Texas — A Complete Outdoor Guide

One of Abilene's most underappreciated qualities is its park system. The city maintains 17 different park and trail locations, ranging from massive multi-purpose recreational complexes to quiet neighborhood spots perfect for a morning walk or an afternoon picnic. Add in the nearby state park and lake, and Abilene gives outdoor enthusiasts a surprisingly full plate.

Here's your guide to the best parks in Abilene.

The Big Ones

Grover Nelson Park

Abilene's largest park, at over 174 acres, Grover Nelson Park is the city's outdoor hub. Situated adjacent to the Abilene Zoo, it offers something for virtually every outdoor activity — a 20-acre lake, five baseball and softball fields, two playgrounds, a well-lit walking and running track, a large splash pad, a disc golf course, and more! Fishing is popular along the lakefront, and the sunset views over the water are some of the best in the city. Benches, pavilions, and picnic areas are well-distributed throughout the park. Free and open daily.

Redbud Park

A sprawling 128-acre park featuring one of Abilene's most popular multi-use trail systems. The 6.1-mile trail through Redbud Park is a favorite among runners, walkers, and cyclists, and the park's diverse terrain makes it one of the more scenic options in the city. Athletic fields, a splash pad, a dog park, a playground, fitness trails, volleyball and soccer fields, and clean restrooms make it a full-featured destination. Consistently rated as one of Abilene's top parks.

Lake Fort Phantom Hill / Johnson Park

Located just north of the city at Lake Fort Phantom Hill, Johnson Park is Abilene's premier outdoor lakeside destination. A beach swimming area, fishing docks, a playground, a volleyball court, picnic tables with grills, pavilions for reservation, and ample parking make it a natural choice for family days out. Camping is available through Johnson Park, which has been a local favorite for over two decades. The sunsets here — wide West Texas sky over open water — are genuinely spectacular. Free to visit; no alcohol permitted.

Oscar Rose Park (Rose Park)

Located at South 7th and Mockingbird, Rose Park is a well-loved community park with a range of amenities including a playground with spongy flooring for young kids, swings, a skate park, basketball courts, a volleyball pit, walking paths, and the adjacent Adventure Cove Water Park. A favorite for families with young children.

For Walkers, Runners & Nature Lovers

Kirby Lake Park & Nature Play Area

A 51.7-acre park centered around Kirby Lake — a primarily fishing lake with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. The park also offers a playground, baseball and softball complexes, a practice backstop, and a public boat ramp and fishing pier. Birders particularly love Kirby Lake, where species including herons, egrets, pelicans, desert cardinals, and a variety of ducks and shorebirds can be spotted, especially on the east side of the lake in early morning. No swimming is permitted at Kirby Lake.

Everman Park

This historic downtown park named in 1914 after a rail company officer, Everman Park is both a beautiful green space and home to a collection of storybook sculptures from Dr. Seuss, benches, and a fountain! It's a wonderful spot for families exploring downtown on foot.

For Dog Owners

Abilene is a dog-friendly city that offers a dedicated dog park, Camp Barkley, located at Cal Young Park! It is free to use and offers separate areas for large and small dogs, covered seating pavilions, doggie water fountains, and restrooms.

Additional dog-friendly trail options include the ACU campus walking trail, Red Bud Park, Nelson Park, and Kirby Lake Park.

The State Park

Abilene State Park

Just 16 miles southwest of Abilene in Buffalo Gap, Abilene State Park is one of West Texas's most beloved outdoor destinations. Shaded by large cedar and oak trees along the banks of Elm Creek, the park offers hiking, biking, fishing, birdwatching, camping, geocaching, and picnicking across more than five miles of trails.

A few current notes for visitors:

  • The historic CCC-era swimming pool (built in the 1930s) remains closed for extensive renovations as of 2026. TPWD is working to replace pump and filtration equipment and is committed to reopening it — follow Abilene State Park's social media for updates

  • Buffalo Wallow Pond remains a favorite fishing spot, especially for kids

  • Day use entrance fee: $5 per person

Despite the current pool conditions, the hiking trails, camping, and shaded surroundings make the state park worth visiting.

Splash Pads

Abilene operates six free splash pads from April through October, located at Grover Nelson Park, Redbud Park, Scarborough Park, Arthur Sears Park, Stevenson Park, and Valentine Park. Check the City of Abilene's social media for current operating status of individual locations.
